I'm going to talk about Gertrude Belle Elion.
"Don’t be afraid of hard work. Nothing worthwhile comes easily. Don’t let others discourage you or tell you that you can’t do it. In my day I was told women didn’t go into chemistry. I saw no reason why we couldn’t.” – Gertrude B. Elion
Gertrude was born on January 23, 1918, in New york city. Famous as a Biochemist and Farmacologist, who, with George H. Hitchings and Sir James Black, won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988. They developed various new drugs that helped million of people around the world.
She recieved other awards for her work.
A brilliant and curios girl, she always wanted to learn and she loved all the subjects in the school.
At the age of 15 years, her beloved grandfather died of cancer. Because of that she wanted to do something could lead to a cure for that terrible disease.
In 1930 her family wasn't financially good so she wondered if she be able to study in a higher education. Fortunatly she had the oportunity to secure a place, which was a free one, in the Hunter College,
She graduated in 1937 with a degree in Chemestry. Then she worked in a laboratoy with Hitching, they did research about the difference in the biochemistry of a normal human cell and those of cancer cells, bacteria and other pathogens.
Elion developed a large amount of drugs in her career which includes mainly; Purinethol the first treatment for leukemia, Azathioprine(Imuran) used for organs transplants, Nelarabine.
For all the contribution and the help to the world I think Getrude was an important person.
And also I wanted to talk about a scientist woman.
